Hong Kong Protests: Explained.
Thousands of protesters have
been gathering in the streets
of Hong Kong for months.
Their most recent cause for concern
is a proposed extradition bill.
The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance
in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill
would allow suspected offenders to be sent to a
broader range of countries, including mainland China.
Opponents of the bill fear Hong Kong's judicial
independence from Beijing would become jeopardized,
and it would open the door to "legalized kidnapping.".
The bill was suspended by Hong Kong's
chief executive, Carrie Lam, in June, but
it has not yet been formally withdrawn.
The protesters, who want the bill struck down,
utilize umbrellas to protect themselves from
pepper spray, tear gas and police cameras.
As far as other countries getting involved,
President Trump has encouraged Beijing to
"work humanely with Hong Kong."
